Main areas of cooperation:

Relations between Georgia and the Republic of Bulgaria are traditionally friendly and partnership oriented. The political dialogue holds on a regular basis, both in bilateral and multilateral formats.

More than 30 international agreements are signed between the two countries, regulating almost every sphere of cooperation.

Bulgaria strongly supports and actively facilitates Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration process and was main advocate of introducing Visa Liberalization for Georgian citizens. Georgia is a beneficiary country of Bulgaria’s Development Cooperation Program.

In 2017-2019 the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Georgia was assuming the functions of NATO contact point Embassy.

Cooperation in the fields of economy, energy, transport, culture and education is actively deepening. Joint Intergovernmental Economic Commission between Georgia and Bulgaria is a successful mechanism for further enhancing economic cooperation, the last - 6th session was held on 4-5 April 2019 in Sofia.

Cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries is fruitfully developing. Parliamentary Friendship Groups are established in both Parliaments.

University of St. Sofia Kliment Ohridski and Tbilisi State University, also St. Andrew the First-Called Georgian University of the Patriarchate of Georgia and the Institute of Byzantine heritage studies of Bachkovo Monastery in Bulgaria successfully cooperate. From the beginning of 2019-2020 Academic Year, course of Bulgarian language is introduced on the humanitarian sciences cathedra of the Sukhumi State University in Tbilisi – facilitating deepening cultural ties between two nations.

Bachkovo Monastery in Bulgaria represents a significant part of historic and cultural relations. Monastery was founded by Bakurianisdze brothers and the miraculous Georgian icon of Virgin Mary is placed there.

 

Two countries have several sister cities:

 

Tbilisi – Sofia;

Kutaisi – Plovdiv;

Poti – Varna;

Poti – Burgas;

Batumi – Burgas;

Batumi – Blagoevgrad;

Kobuleti – Varna.
